+ This one bothers me because in many religions (Catholicism for one), divorce IS banned.  If you are Catholic, getting divorced is basically a grave sin.  Catholics get around this by basically saying that even if two people get divorced by civil law, they are still considered married by moral law. The real problem comes up when a divorced person tries to remarry; under those circumstances, they are supposed to try to get a piece of paper indicating that the original marriage was never valid to begin with.  Otherwise, adultery.
Whatever the maneuvering, the fact remains that, if one believe that your god is against divorce, it compels people, usually women, to stay in abusive relationships.  And some women would think it better to get the shit beat out of them every night if it means that they don’t get sent to hell to get the shit beat out of them for the rest of eternity.
So, I would say that we should not in any way try to encourage religions to ban divorce, because many religions may be more than happy to do so.
