I’m a 50 year old librarian named Steven Smith who started this blog because of a dispute over the concept of separation of church and state on Facebook. I don’t feel free to post my true feelings on Facebook, so I came here to vent and espouse whatever little wisdom I can claim to have on the subject of atheism.
This is a mainly an atheist agnostic blog. I do, however, delve into political and social issues. While there are many fine blogs out there, I will only be subscribing to blogs of an atheistic nature.
I call myself an agnostic atheist. From Wikipedia: Agnostic atheism, also called atheistic agnosticism, is a philosophical position that encompasses both atheism and agnosticism. Agnostic atheists are atheistic because they do not hold a belief in the existence of any deity and agnostic because they claim that the existence of a deity is either unknowable in principle or currently unknown in fact.
In other words, I acknowledge that it’s impossible to prove if there is or is not a god (agnosticism), but I personally don’t believe there is one (atheism)
The distinction, to me, is important. Most people see atheists as people who claim to know for certain that there is no god, which to me is just as foolish as claiming to know for certain that there is one. I would much rather answer questions from people confused by the definition than have people assume that I claim absolute certainty on something that I do not.
